It’s not often master artisans capable of creating a city of ice travel to the D.C. area, but this year, they’re doing just that! The making of ICE!® is bound for the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center for the Christmas season. This year, the signature holiday attraction will feature a Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer theme.
Ice artisans from Harbin, China put their skills to transform two million pounds of ice into a winter wonderland. ICE!® is more than just a unique attraction that draws in thousands upon thousands of visitors every year. To the artisans, it’s an art that dates back more than 500 years ago.
Ice Lantern Festivals date back to the Chinese province of Heilongjiang, where a population of hunters used ice blocks and candles to navigate through the dark forests. The ice that surrounded the candle magnified the light, effectively creating an ice lantern.
In 1963, the Mayor of Harbin created a competition that challenges entrants to create spectacular ice displays. The competition has since seen some massive ice creations placed in public parks every year since.
This year’s ICE!® attraction features a Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer theme. 35 artisans took to two million pounds of ice in nine-degree weather to create four ice slides, the Nativity scene, and the story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The attraction is open until January 1st. Tickets are $24 per child and $32 per adult.
We here at Tom Hodges Mitsubishi hope you and your family will find the time to experience the making of ICE!® This unique winter attraction is an amazing display the entire family will enjoy!
